When AI Meets Telecom Infrastructure

I’ve spent the last twenty years inside wireless networks. RF engineering, protocol design, standards work, building companies. And for most of that time, the intelligence layer on top of the network was some combination of dashboards, spreadsheets, and tribal knowledge.

That’s changing fast.

The thing most people miss about the AI-and-telecom story is that it’s not about replacing network engineers with chatbots. It’s about giving AI access to the data that network engineers already use to make decisions, and letting it find patterns we never could at scale.

At Helium, my team and I have been building MCP (Model Context Protocol) interfaces that give AI models structured access to real network telemetry. Think RADIUS session data, CDRs, hotspot metadata, coverage maps. The kind of data that lives in Trino clusters and SQLite databases, not in a nice tidy API.

The reason this matters: a network serving millions of daily users generates an absurd volume of operational data. No human can watch all of it. Traditional monitoring tools catch threshold violations, but they miss the subtle correlations, the patterns that only emerge when you cross-reference subscriber behavior with access point performance with time-of-day with geography.

AI can do that. But only if it can reach the data.

That’s the bottleneck right now. Not model capability. Models are already good enough to analyze network data and surface actionable insights. The bottleneck is structured data access. Clean interfaces. Context that tells the model what the columns mean, how the tables relate, what the business rules are.

This is why I’m spending time on it. Not because it’s trendy, but because I’ve sat in enough war rooms staring at dashboards to know that the next leap in network operations isn’t faster hardware or denser spectrum. It’s the intelligence layer. And for the first time, the tools exist to build it.

The telecom industry has always been good at generating data. We’re about to get good at using it.
